In South Carolina’s northwestern corner, the Greenville - Spartanburg area -- two communities about 20 miles apart -- brims with attractions, historical sites, and lush scenery. Mild climate permits assorted outdoor activities year around. The Blue Ridge Mountains are less than an hour’s drive away, with Carolina beaches within a half day’s drive. Spartanburg’s rich history includes the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Cowpens, where Gen. Daniel Morgan and the Spartan militia defeated British troops, thanks to what historians deem as a brilliant series of tactical moves. Area attractions, accordingly, include Cowpens National Battlefield, with special events and a living history demonstration occurring each January. More peaceful remnants of Colonial days are on display in the old "Belk Building," now home to the Spartanburg Regional Museum. One exhibit includes the Pardo Stone, believed left behind by Spanish explorer Juan Pardo in 1567. Walnut Grove Plantation, off Highway 221 in Roebuck, provides glimpses of Spartanburg County life on the Revolutionary era frontier. Although headquarters for Denny’s restaurants, Spartanburg has plenty of other chains from Applebee’s and Quizno’s to Ruby Tuesday, plus a fine assortment of independently owned eateries for cuisines from American burgers to Thai. The region is served by the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), as well as the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport. Accommodation range from bed and breakfasts to business hotels.
